Why Is My Projector Making a Loud Noise?

Almost everyone gets annoyed by the loud noise the projector causes in the middle of the movie. It is not a thing that will disrupt the movie night, but it is annoying since you hear like the projector is “nervous.” And guess what? – It is.

The loud noise produced by the projector indicates that something creates tension and disrupts the normal work of the projector and its vents.

It happened multiple times until I learned and realized why is my projector making a loud noise. So, I decided to share it with you to help you place the projector properly and avoid the loud noise it usually makes.

Why Is My Projector Making a Loud Noise

Why Is My Projector Making a Loud Noise?

The noise you usually hear from your projector is its cooling fan. The fan comes on when the projector heats up because of long use, high room temperature, or when something is blocking the normal airflow and its vents. In other words, the loud noise comes from the hardened cooling fan work. Often, this issue can be easily fixed if you know what causes it.

Suppose your projector is set on a table or holder where the air flows well. If it produces loud noise even when a piece of furniture does not block its ventilation system, it might be caused by the high room temperature.

When this happens, it is best to reduce the room temperature and let the projector cool. The good room temperature is something below 27 degrees Celsius. If it crosses 27 degrees Celsius, it might be the reason for the loud noise coming from your projector.

The last thing that might cause the projector’s loud noise is the barriers or furniture that disrupts the normal airflow. When there is no airflow in the projector’s vents, it might tire and struggle to work properly.

Common Causes and Solutions for Projector Loud Noise

On for too long

Watching multiple episodes of the new series might also be bad for your eyes and the projector’s health. Keeping the projector on for too long might make it tired and warm, producing loud fan noise.

The projector will work excellently if you use it for two or two and a half hours, but anything longer might increase its temperature and produce the loud noise we are talking about. So, if you plan to make a movie marathon, it is best to turn it off between the sessions, like when you go to eat.

Solution

In this case, the best is to turn off the projector for a while and let it cool and rest. Make the power off cycle when you leave the room, like when you do some tasks around your home, eat, clean, etc. This will cool your projector and extend its longevity.

Common Causes and Solutions for Projector Loud Noise

High room temperature

High room temperature might heat the projector much faster. This often produces loud noise that might disrupt your presentation or movie night.

As I mentioned before, it is okay for the room temperature to be from 22 to 27 degrees Celsius. If it is warmer than 27 degrees Celsius, it might be bad for the projector and make it heat up faster than usual.

Solution

If the room temperature is the cause of the loud noise, it is best to reduce it and let the projector cool down for a while. Open the windows and let the fresh air circulate in the room or reduce the heat of the heating object in your room.

Dust accumulation

Honestly, when was the last time you cleaned up the projector? The answer might be “never” in most cases, which is understandable why the projector heats up fast even if everything around seems pretty okay for its proper function.

Its vents are open and allow the air to flow freely. The fan that cools up the projector vacuums air and dust since it is so lightweight and present everywhere around us. Long projector usage without cleaning its fans might result in producing loud noise.

Solution

Open up the projector with a screwdriver and clean the accumulated dirt and dust from its fans. Use rubbing alcohol in small amounts, cotton earbuds, and tiny soft brushes. Ask a professional to help you out with the cleaning if you feel insecure doing it on your own.

Barriers

The barriers around the projector are often the number one cause of loud noise. Many people think it is better to put the projector in a hole, whether it is a shelf or projector holder. It is not good for the projector to be enclosed in a tiny area because it does not let it “breathe.”

Solution

Set the projector free. Find a flat surface not surrounded by furniture and barriers that block the proper airflow in the projector’s vents.

Mechanical failures

Sometimes the loud noise is due to mechanical failures. This issue appears when the projector has been used for many years, and it is already old and gets “tired” faster. The power it has when you buy it and the power after years of consistent use lead to mechanical failures and defects that might cause the loud noise.

Solution

It is time for retirement. If you have used the projector for years and years, it is time to send it to history and buy yourself a new one. You can also bring the projector to a servicer and fix the issue or change the damaged part, but it will not last forever.

Conclusion

In my case, I realized why is my projector making a loud noise immediately. I am a person who wants to have everything tidy and well-packed, so I put the projector on a case shelf and blocked the airflow.

Once I realized that it caused the loud noise of the projector, I removed it from there and placed it on a flat and free surface.
