One of the first things to consider before properly placing the projector is how much throw distance it has. The throw distance is the space between the screen and the projector, and if they’re properly spaced apart, then the image will have the best quality.
There are several types of projectors; when categorizing them by the throw distance:
- Ultra short throw projector – with a throw distance of 0.5 to 2 meters
- Short throw projector – with a throw distance of 2 to 4 meters
- Standard throw projector – with a throw distance of 4 to 8 meters
- Long throw projector – with a throw distance of 8 to 16 meters
The size and placement of the screen
The screen size and placement are also important to consider, and they’re closely related to the following section, which is the room size.
Generally, we can categorize screen sizes as small, medium, and large.
Small screen size is best for smaller rooms with limited space, such as small classrooms, living rooms, or bedrooms. This type of screen is best paired with a small throw distance projector, which you can place close to without the picture being distorted.
Medium and large screens often require more powerful projectors with a higher throw distance value. Probably the most popular screen size that many people prefer is 120 inches, and we will cover placing the projector according to this screen size in one of the following sections.

The size of the room
The room’s size determines how far should a projector be from the screen. How large is the room where you want to place the projector and the screen?
It would be illogical to place a large projector screen in a small room. That would result in an unpleasant viewing experience because you would have to look at the screen from a shorter distance. So if the room size is too small, consider going for a small screen with an ultra-short throw distance projector or a larger TV.
Larger rooms, on the other hand, can support a larger screen and a projector with a higher throw distance value.
It is also important to think about the sitting order in the room, as the best viewing experience comes from sitting somewhere in the middle. If the room is narrow and steep, you can try placing the seats in rows, just like in the cinema.

To simplify this, I will tell you how to quickly calculate your projector’s throw ratio if you cannot find this information in the user manual.
The basic formula for calculating the throw ratio of a projector is this: How far the projector is from the screen in inches, divided by the screen’s size and inches.
If, for example, the projector is set at a distance of 175 inches from the screen, and the screen size is 120 inches, then the throw ratio would be 175/120 = 1.46:1. Or in other words, you can multiply the throw ratio with the size of the screen, to obtain the distance of the projector: 1.46 x 120 = 175.
Note that the screen size of 120 inches is measured diagonally in the example. Screen sizes are diagonally represented, and you can obtain the screen size by multiplying the height and width values using the Pythagorean theorem.
Why It’s Important to Place the Projector Properly?
Proper placement of a screen projector is mainly important for a satisfactory viewing experience. Let’s face it; nobody wants a bad experience while watching a movie, struggling to focus their eyes on the screen and constantly adjusting their head position.
If the projector and screen are placed accordingly, the image will have higher quality and not feel distorted or out of place.
Proper sitting in front of a projector screen is also important for the viewer. You may have noticed often that the front row at the cinema is empty because that is where the worst viewing experience comes from, especially with large screens.
So it’s always best to sit somewhere in the middle, between the projector and the screen, or even further from the screen and closer to the projector.
